Hyeon Cheol was an important drama critic and theorist in Korea of the early modern period (1920s). At that time, a lot of people who they were related the play wanted to make a new form of modern drama. Therefore, various dramatic experimentations practiced in Korea. Among the experimentations, his works were strong impressive and unique.
First of all, he had arguments with other people who related to do in new poem and new drama. In those controversies handled about the form and the content in Korea of modern literature. He maintained that the art of Korean must to have thought, emotion and culture of Korean.
Second, there was more important work in his articles. It was the Art Movement of German and Expressionism that was the very important article because it mentioned about defeated person or nation which they lose on the World War. It means that after the First World War, the situation of German was similar to Korea under the rule of Japanese imperialism.
For this reason, he selected Expressionism drama for new form, and moreover he composed an Expressionism drama. In conclusion, his only one drama Keon (犬: The dog) shows that evoked people’s image of their lives, created the new human, resisted against a patriarchal system. His try to the contrary, the drama has a defect which the new human return to the system with marriage.
Therefore, as the starting work of Korean Expressionism drama, Keon has the great limit even if has the great value in our drama history. However, we have to think about our form of modern drama again. That’s way he was a writer that he needs to be worth a reread. Through the reread about his works, we can get a chance that modifies mistakes of the Korean drama history.
