This thesis is an analysis and understanding of Jeong Ji-Yong's poem "Nostalgia" in terms of the theory of the Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. The theory is not a principle of the universe but a principle of phenomena of the universe. It is at once a perspective and methodology highly effective to reveal how the world works and what is hidden below.
The examination of the poem from the perspective has led to the conclusion that we could discover 'imaginations of the Yin' variously embodied in the context of both style and meaning, and that the variety of the imaginations of the Yin is the very factor which greatly appeals to the reader.
On the concrete level, we see the poet's mastery of imaginations of the Yin realized in a various way from the first stanza to five, which are centered on nature and a rural community and its family lives. Besides, those imaginations of the Yin are multi-dimensionally manifested with the effective use of kinetic and static numbers and refrains, including modernist techniques focused on the rhetoric of descriptions.
Those imaginations of "Nostalgia" help people, who are living in a modern urbanized civilization overpowered by force of the Yang, to achieve a balance between material and spiritual lives. Especially, the imaginations of the Yin in "Nostalgia" play a crucial role for urban people living in this country who have suffered from the heat and dry of the existence generated by so called "summer civilization," which has been started with the expansion and increase of force of the Yang since the 1990s.
Not only living creatures but also everything in the universe are oriented towards a condition of balance between the Yin and Yang. That the balance has been achieved means that an existence is set in a state of healthy condition. In this sense, Jeong Ji-Yong's "Nostalgia" plays a role in healing people in our society overpowered by the urban force of the Yang, revealing the postmodern symptoms having been developed since the 1990s as well as conditions of the modern urban population. A healthy condition of existence through healing is an essential matter in life for both poets and readers.
