This paper illuminates how Jung Mo Yoon’s Mom’s Name Was a Chosenpee and Nora Okja Keller’s Comfort Woman bring out significant issues of Japanese colonialism, historical trauma and the surviving comfort women’s position in a historical context interwoven with multiple social structures. Yoon’s and Keller’s novels call on us to rethink in depth the complex nature of comfort women’s experiences during the wartime: sexual exploitation of Korean women by the Japanese and patriarchal domination. Through the voice of surviving comfort women, Yoon and Keller give us access to a historical truth that has been otherwise occluded and obscured by the nationalist patriarchal discourse of Japanese colonial history. This paper argues that, in inserting women’s narratives into the historical discourse surrounding World War II and Japanese colonial rule in Korea, Yoon’s and Keller’s novels challenge the patriarchal hegemonic discourse. Ultimately, both writers’ works offer a revision of the hegemonic discourse by inserting the comfort women’s traumatic memory as reliable evidentiary source.
