Motivation is believed to be a key factor to make second language learning successful. Yet, there have been few studies that illustrate the intricate ways motivation influences language learning. This qualitative case study describes language learning experiences of two international students－one Korean and one Japanese－at an American graduate school and explores the ways in which motivation affected their learning. While one learner had strong integrative motivation, the other did not. Their motivational disparity was observed in various facets of their life and strongly influenced their learning in their pursuits of academic and communicative competency. Briefly, instrumental motivation enabled participants to maintain a certain level of proficiency to study at an American graduate school; however, integrative motivation was more powerful in helping a participant pursue both academic and communicative proficiency. The detailed findings and suggestions will be discussed in the study.
