This strict Freudian reading of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein will focus on Frankenstein’s mental and emotional imbalance in general, and on his suffering from a repressed oedipal and narcissist complex, in particular. As this text analysis explores Frankenstein’s heimlich narcissist want of scientific success and unheimlich sexual longing for his mother, it becomes clear that the suddenly “born” Monster has to be understood as a distorted outer manifestation of the young scientist’s uncanny other, his hidden double, which comes to life first in his dreams, then in reality. When dream becomes reality, the young scientist’s deja vu of his repressed self is complete: Victor’s illegitimate sexual desire for the (new) mother-imago has reappeared. The Monster is alive.
