When he asks Frankenstein at the end of his life story to create a female companion for him, the Creature becomes sexualized. Paying attention to his gender and heterosexual desire latent until then, the essay examines the ways in which the Creature attempts to establish his humanity and sexual identity. The essay shows how the Creature learns meanings of community and sexual relationship through the model of the De Lacey family. Ultimately, the essay argues that the Creature’s adoption of a male identity implies his desire to claim a secure identity and control his female creature.
