This study investigated how the characteristic of juvenile delinquent groups affects juvenile delinquency by means of a longitudinal study. The relationship between the characteristic of juvenile delinquent group and delinquency can be divided into two opposite tentative theories; namely, the social ability model and the social disability model. Based on these two tentative theories, this study verified which theory is relatively superior in explaining juvenile delinquency. In addition, a latent growth model was used to analyze the relationship between the factors' changes over time and each factors thereof. As a result of analyzing the KYPS data from the NYPI (National Youth Policy Institute), the changes in each factor over time indicate that the intimacy with friends increased consistently over the passage of time. In addition, mildly delinquent friends also increased consistently, however, seriously delinquent friends and seriously delinquent behaviour decreased. In conclusion, this study indicates that the influence of the characteristics of the delinquent friends group upon juvenile delinquency, in the case of mild delinquency, supports the social mobility model, and in the case of serious delinquency, the social disability model is supported. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that preventive measures need to be established in accordance with the seriousness of the delinquency in question.
