In this paper, we report the effect of the same treatment on shoot growth the following years and their NSCs. Results showed that the same degree of bud thinning imposed on the same tree for three consecutive years did not result in significant differences in new shoot growth and shoot NSCs the following years unless the degree was as severe as the thinning of all buds (ABT). Only the ABT trees showed a significantly increased growth of shoots in two of three years. Starch and soluble sugars in shoot wood and shoot leaves showed the same results, reflecting the amount of shoot growth rather than their concentrations. We were unable to demonstrate a cause-and-effect relationship between the degree of fruit thinning in a current year and shoot growth in the following year in mature trees. It was concluded that mature persimmon trees, having a large pool of nutrient reserves, were too recalcitrant to show a positive change in shoot growth and its NSCs the following year by thinning treatments of a year or two.
