The effect of bud-thinning severities was studied as to the growth and seasonal changes in carbohydrates in shoots of mature persimmon trees (Diospyros kaki cv. Fuyu). Thinning severities included the removal of all (ABT) or no buds (NBT), and of the buds at the conventional (CLBT) or 1/2 of the conventional level (1/2CLBT). The trees received the same treatment for three consecutive years. The CLBT and 1/2CLBT trees resulted in a 76 and 46% cumulative yield of NBT trees, respectively. Trunk cross-sectional area was increased by 13 to 22% in three years without a clear relationship between the increment and the bud-thinning severities. Leaf dry weight (DW) gradually declined during senescence. In general, DW as well as starch and soluble sugar contents were higher in NBT and lower in ABT leaves. Analysis of seasonal changes indicated that the assimilatory capacity of leaves was increased by the presence of more fruit sinks, and that leaf carbohydrates were not so actively mobilized. in persimmon trees during senescence. Starch and sugars of CLBT leaves, averaged from the three-year measurements, were 3.3 and 5.8% in August, but increased to 3.9 and 9.6% in November, respectively. Carbohydrate contents of the leaves were higher when they abscised earlier. No treatment effects were significant for shoot DW. However, shoot DW and their contents of nonstructural carbohydrates decreased as the year passed. Only the ABT shoots were different from the shoots of other treatments in that their DW in 1995 was as high as those in 1993, and their contents of nonstructural carbohydrates were similar in all three years. Starch concentrations of CLBT shoots peaked at 11.5% in mid-October, followed by a decline to 8-9% until March the following year. Shoot soluble sugars increased to 18-19% by December, and they then decreased to 9.5% by mid-March. The fruit-load effect accumulated for three years could hardly be demonstrated in shoot growth and carbohydrates of mature persimmon trees unless the degree of bud thinning was extreme like the ABT treatment in this study.
