The immediate aim of this thesis is to explore critically McLuhan's media philosophy known as 'the oracle of the electronic age' or 'media guru'. And by means of this study we expect to grasp the characteristic of mode of thought in the age of electronic media even dimly. In particular, this thesis takes up the method of comparing the media philosophy of McLuhan with the thought of J. Derrida as one of the prominent figures in contemporary philosophy. By focusing the horizon of comparing McLuhan with Derrida on the book culture as the representational press media, this thesis examined those commonness and differences in diagnosing the affairs and explored their background and vision. However, because both arguments do not directed to each other consciously the scope of this study is not to compare the thoughts of the two entirely but the very limited theses such as the word, aurality, tactility and communication.
