The appearance, regional distribution and frequency of the argyrophil endocrine cells were studied in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of immunodifficient nude mouse-Balb/c-nu/nu mouse by Grimelius silver techniques. Female SPF Balb/c-nu/nu mice were used in this study. The GI tract of mice was divided into eight regions-the fundus, pylorus, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, colon, cecum and rectum according to generally histological profiles of vertebra GI tract in this study. The argyrophil cells were observed throughout the whole GI tracts. Most of argyrophil cells in the intestinal regions were generally spherical or spindle in shape (open-typed cell) while cells showing round in shape (close-typed cell) were found in the intestinal gland of crypts and basal portions of gastric mucosa occasionally. They were most predominantly detected in the pylorus as 121.60 ± 21.81 cells/total 1000 cells and then detected in the order of the fundus, colon, rectum, duodenum, cecum, jejunum and ileum as 68.30±14.65, 23.70±5.36, 16.30±6.13, 10.30±1.57, 5.20±2.39, 2.20±0.92 and 1.90±0.99 cells/total 1000 cells, respectively. In conclusion, the distribution and frequency of argyrophil cells in the GI tract of Balb/c-nu/nu mice were similar to those of other animals especially to rodents except for some strain/or species dependent characteristic distributions.
