Biodegradable materials have various important applications in the biomedical field. Before a biomaterial can be applied clinically, it has to be certified as to be noncytotoxic and biocompatible. Poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) [PLGA] 65/35 scaffold, named InnoPolⓡ manufactured by special gas foaming methods in Korea, has been subjected to assess on the physical-chemical characterization of scaffold and its extract. In addition, toxicity studies were performed to evaluate the InnoPolⓡ as a medical device. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies revealed that InnoPolⓡ had relatively homologous pore structure possessing an average pore size of 73.98 urn and porosity of 89.69%. Differential scanning calorimetry thermograms showed that PLGA scaffold have a glass transition at 56.1℃. The toxicity studies showed that InnoPolⓡ had no side effect such as cytotoxicity, hemolysis in vitro, genotoxicity, acute systemic toxicity, pyrogenicity, intracutaneous skin irritation reactivity, encapsulation in implantation and sensitization. These results suggest that PLGA scaffold, InnoPolⓡ may have good mechanical properties with no side effect, and it would be useful in application as medical device for implantation.
