The prickly pear (Opuntia spp.), a member of the Cactaceae family, is widely distributed throughout the world. Most of Cactaceae family is known to be therapeutic and improvable properties for arthritis, cancer, and so on. Opuntia humifusa (OH) is used as folk medicine in Korea. The purpose of this study was to investigate the toxicities of the single dose and 14 days repeated dose in Sprague-Dawley rats orally administered with Opuntia humifusa extract at dose levels of 0, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 ㎎/㎏ body weight/day. The single oral dose of the extracts at 2,000 ㎎/㎏ did not produce mortality or abnormal gross lesion in the internal organs of SD rats. The results of 14 days orally repeated dose showed that there was no difference in body weight change, food intake, water consumption, and relative organ weight among different dose groups. Also we observed no death and abnormal clinical signs during the all experimental period. There was no statistical significance in hematological tests or serum biochemical values between treated groups and the control group. There was no evidence of histopathological alteration mediated by 14 days treatment with OH extract. These results indicate that no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) of 14 days orally OH extract repeated dose was considered to be more than 2,000 ㎎/㎏ in both sexes of SD rats.
