Measurement by remote sensing is highly efficient but raw signals from instrument require careful interpretations. Among many remote sensing platforms, radar has successfully applied to a number of important issues such as wind field, rainfall intensity, and cloud volume. We conducted radar measurements (1) to measure a diffusion behavior of a chaff plume that are released from an aircraft and (2) to determine the atmospheric boundary layer. A WSR-88D (NEXRAD) radar is used to observe temporal and spatial distributions of the released chaff. The radar pointing at three elevation angles (0.4°, 1.4°, 2.5°) provides three-dimensional reflectivity fields of chaff (x, y, z). While radar measurement provides present state, numerical models are useful to investigate dynamical and physical characteristics. We have developed a Gaussian diffusion model and applied the model in stable atmospheric condition. Reasonable agreement between the two methods are observed. The results suggest that more accurate horizontal and vertical diffusion coefficients are obtained. At longer diffusion distances than that of 10km, a radar observation provides information for the determination of maximum range and diffusion height more qualitatively.
