The Social works of christianity affect the lives of the social minority groups strongly not only in terms of the salvation of souls but also in terms of provision of food for them This paper examines the roles of Catholic social works for the Hansen’s disease patients in Korea Hansen’s disease patients have been stigmatized as a social minority group and segregated from the society. Many relief agencies for them have worked for providing medical services and helping their livelihoods. The activities of the relief agencies were not confined to the field of material relief but left many influences in terms of everyday life, culture and social consciousness. The leprosy relief works provided basis for the official repeal of the segregation policy; the free contacts of the foreign relief workers with Korean patients changed the attitudes of Korean medical workers to be more friendly with the patients. However, there rose the conflicts among the patients caused by the material resources provided by the relief agencies, since this resources were the only resources, they could obtain from the outer society. As the social works became established, many Korean social workers appeared, and moreover Korean Hansen’s disease patients started to help other patients in under-developed countries. Although many critical comments against the religion related social works are raised recently, it is hard to deny the merits of the religion related social works and we have to be more cautious to the roles and influences of the social works.
