The Sensa Feast-day held an important role in social and political life of Venice, which resulted in one of the most important and sumptuous celebration, interweaving the legend, myth and history of the city. Today I prefer to give it the meaning of the festivity of the sea and therefore of a festivity of a city which draws its raison d' tre from its relationship with the sea.
In this article I examine the origins of Marriage to the sea, the process and meaning of Marriage to the sea at the times of the Serenissima, the Sensa Fair, and the Sensa today. I insist that the Marriage to the sea in Venice is not only the result of an overlapping of civil and religious rite and events through the ages but the openness, global character, interaction through the sea.
The case of Venice is very useful to our regional or local government and citizens who are interested in how to organize the Sea Festival. The key points are as follows: the identity of the city such as its relation with the sea, participation of the citizen, fundamental objective of festival such as to look to the past to better appreciate the present and have a positive attitude to the future.
