Since the research on the tum-taking system by Sacks et al. (1974), many studies have been done on the sequential structure and interactional nature of conversation. This study is an attempt to explore the nature of the turn-constructional component, focusing on the sequential and interactional contexts of full noun phrases (NPs) that function as independent turn-constructional units (TCUs) in English conversation. It deals with the questions of in what contexts full NPs constitute independent TCUs and what functions or social actions are involved in those contexts. The examination of the English conversational data shows that full NP turns are found in the following sequential and interactional contexts: (ⅰ) question- answer sequences, (ⅱ) co-construction sequences in instantiating constructive schemas, (ⅲ) repair sequences (self-repair and other-initiated repair, particularly as next-tum repair initiators). The functions or social actions that full NP turns perform are: (ⅰ) providing requested information, (ⅱ) seeking and providing confirmation, (ⅲ) initiating repair, (ⅳ) serving as descriptive comments, (ⅴ) providing additional information to the previous tum(s), and (ⅵ) serving as vocatives or address terms, among others. This study of full NP turns shows interactive nature of the turn-constructional component, suggesting the need to explore the relationship between interaction and grammar which is constantly shaped by the interaction between speaker and hearer.
