This paper explains the utterance form and semantic function of tag questions in Korean, by distinguishing the conceptual significance of tag questions into two-fold domains, confirmation question and negative question, and then addressing the correlation between negative questions and confirmation questions. We advance that the speaker 's seeking confirmation or agreement from the hearer may be explained by the articulation of utterance form and semantic content. Given that the speaker's expectation in bias of the hearer's positive reply is indicated by the presence of the tag component, we provide the definition of tag component with reference to the distribution of the fundamental factors such as [committal], [negative] and [deictic]. Considering that the text-deictic ‘kule(ha)-,’ in its co-occurrence with either negation form or committal ‘-ci,’ enfolds a subtext of the semantic properties such as ‘(pre- )supposition,’ confirmation, we suggest, the speaker's employment of a tag question leads the speaker to introduce his or her sincerity into the realm of the speaker-hearer inter-subjectivity. On the other hand, the confirmation effect by way of the form of tag-less negative questions has been ascribed to the speaker's willingness to strengthen the positive polarity of the body clause, despite the presence of the ambivalent polarities in negative forms. The conceptual and empirical interpretations laid out in this paper would hopefully be a ground for establishing the possible world to predict that the dual aspects of form and function are developed to represent the cohesive and focusing roles of the speaker and addressee, and to reinforce the discourse participants' common ground.
