This research explores the genesis of 16 complex Sino-Korean postpositions whose core meanings are derived from their participating monosyllabic Sino-Korean words, which are almost never used by themselves. These forms have undergone diverse paradigmatic and syntagmatic changes. Some of these changes are attributable to their competition in use with their synonymous native Korean counterparts. Comparisons of the Sino-Korean and native Korean postpositional system produce certain generalizations of interest. Some of these Sino-Korean postpositions thrive in Modern Korean for the absence of native Korean rivals for the same function, thus enjoying a high use frequency. On the other hand, some of them are in acute competition with native Korean postpositions, in which case the Sino-Korean postpositions are largely in lower use frequency, and show a specialization phenomenon by being subject to specific genre and style restrictions, i.e, mostly formal and pedantic registers. Still others are very weak in use, mainly due to their inherently low viability, i.e., their grammatical meanings are too specific to be extended across the cognitive domains. The domain of grammatical meanings and structures is considered to be subject to a significant constraint on inter-lingual transfers, and this is confirmed in the Sino-Korean postpositional systems. Furthermore, the two sub-systems of postpositions show differences in the degrees of semantic and morpho-syntactic changes. From a functional point of view, the way the Sino-Korean and native Korean postpositional systems participate in division of labor by dividing a cognitive domain into multiple sub-domains shows how the conflict among competing linguistic forms is settled.
