Politeness is a major pragmatic strategy. It has been widely claimed that politeness is based on a universal inference pattern and thus it is a universal aspect of human communication. The claim has been largely based on the fact that politeness tactic is indirectness, which is suggestive.
Based on a Korean spoken corpus which enables an objective and inductive research, this paper investigates how politeness is realized, and what types of politeness strategies occur in high frequency, thereby establishing a typology of politeness strategies and exploring their cultural implications.
It has been revealed that the high frequency tactics in Korean comprise the use of '-ci ahnta/canhta' which creates negative propositions, 'com' the diminutive marker, and the conjectural modal expression '-n/l kes kathta'. These three types account for 60 per cent of total politeness expressions. These three markers departed from their original semantic functions of negation, diminutive and conjecture respectively, and are in the process of grammaticalization into politeness markers in discourse.
The use of negative proposition in place of a positive proposition is to realize politeness through formality by not imposing a burden or coercion on the addressee; the use of diminutive is to minimize the burden of the addressee; and the use of conjectural for an established fact is also to realize politeness by weakening the assertion into a suggestion. These strategies are based on universal inference patterns and thus they are thought to be universal. There have been claims that plural subjects, requests, and tag-questions are universal strategies and are employed across languages. However, these strategies surface so infrequently in Korean that they can be hardly regarded as actively utilized politeness strategies in Korean unless their specific use contexts warrant such interpretations. This illustrates that there exists cultural difference in the seemingly universal politeness strategies. (Sang Myung University)
