This study aims to show how a speech act of apologizing as a pragmatic strategy is revealed and to examine the aspects of expression connected with the speech act of apologizing. The act of apologizing is a speech act which the speaker tries to make better his or her damaged human relationship with a listener after the speaker's recognizing his or her mistake. Therefore, the speaker gives additional utterance as an pragmatic strategy, which is at 73.9 percent of the data, to restore his or her personal relations. The highest percentage of them is the speaker's self-criticism which is an pragmatics strategy to save face by abasing himself or herself. Therefore, the act of apologizing realize politeness strategy. Accepting one's apology as a speech act in the backward looking function is accounted for 38.1 percent of the data. A act of apologizing is mutual and a speech act that makes a speaker disgrace himself or herself. Concerning personal relations, it's a good reaction to accept his or her apology when one begs forgiveness. The one ,who apologizes, admits the social norm, which is an social act. It is said that acts of apologizing are not often seen in Korean culture and we haven't lively discussed that topic in Korean language so far. However, I hope that comprehensive studies on largely spoken corpus and special features of pan-linguistic speech acts of apologizing will be done based on this study.
