This research is to examine the change of heart rates by stage and identify heart rates and variables of respiratory system in recovery stage by providing 60% of oxygen during gradual maximal excercise using Bruce protocol. For this purpose, fifteen students with physical education major were divided into a group with 60% of oxygen intake and a group with normal oxygen respiration, and they were compared and examined with the following conclusions: Firstly, no difference in total excercise time was made by 60% of oxygen intake during the gradual maximal exercise. Secondly, in the effects on the heart rates by stage, the group with 60% oxygen inkake has lower heart rates in stage Ⅱ (2 min. and 3min.) and stage Ⅲ (1min., 2min., and 3 min.), and stage Ⅳ (1 min. and 3 min.) than the one with normal oxygen intake (p<.05). Thirdly, the group with 60% oxygen intake was shown with higer rates and lower in 4 min. (p>.05) and in five min. (p<.05), respectively than the one with normal oxygen intake. Fourthly, there was no difference in recovery VO₂ between the two groups. Fifthly, the experimental group was shown to have lower CO₂ in the recovery time of 1 min. than the control group (p<.05). Sixthly, there was no difference in RER between them. Therefore, it is concluded that the 60% oxygen intake can significantly reduce the heart rates before and after the ventilatory threshold point, while it does not affect on variables of recovery stage since hyperoxia is prevented as exercise is stopped.
