The purpose of this study was to delve into how since the 1980s Korean martial arts have been internationalized, academized and turned into sports for all and how traditional martial arts have been revived in an effort to discuss the significance of somatic culture in modern Korean martial arts.
There had been a lot of attempts to give a change to Korean martial arts in modern times by developing native martial arts and introducing foreign ones. Foreign martial arts started to be introduced before the Japanese occupation and have since developed into Koreanized somatic culture. Meanwhile, each martial art group has established a training system of its own and boosted exchange with foreign nations to improve the position of Korean martial arts. Specifically, there was a growing concern in the 1980s for cultural heritage, which has provided a chance to dynamize a wide variety of traditional somatic culture, and martial arts have consequently been academized.
It couldn't be denied, however, that there are both positives and negatives of the rapid changes in modern martial arts. On one hand, the internationalization of Korean martial arts, the development of martial arts into sports for all and the resurgence of traditional ones contribute to highlighting the traditionality and identity of martial arts. On the other, excessive efforts to hold lots of competitions rather results in converting martial arts into sports that rule out practical skills. Furthermore, the attempt to academize modern martial arts couldn't be said to be successful, as that ends up engendering several problems, like a distortion of traditionality and historicity or a lack of practical philosophy.
Now more systematic and sustained academic research should desperately be conducted to build the right somatic culture of modern martial arts, and guidelines about how to academize martial arts should be determined. Thus, Korean martial arts have created a new, unified somatic culture by boosting native ones and introducing foreign ones, and have kept changing and developing.
