At this age, upon the threshold of the 21st century, most of the researchers agree that the new century would emerge as an era of both diversified cultural industries and cultural societies. A new paradigm for cultural exchange among nations is required to be formulated; drastic changes in knowledge and government policies concerning the local cultural industry are required to meet standards appropriate to the new century life-style.
Over the past few decades, before the IMF financial crisis in late 1997, Korea enjoyed a remarkable economic growth, earlier in the labor-intensive industries, eventually in the capital-intensive heavy industries. No doubt, Korea had inevitably to find a way to survive economically after the Second World War and the 1950-53 Korean War. Priorities of the government policy were placed upon the development of the national economy and its growth. This policy drives gave a rise to critical economic problems, along with decadent cultural unbalance, resulting in devastation of the country's thousands-of-years-old unique cultural heritage.
In this paper, I endeavored to provide a study about how to meet the requisite standard of the cultural industry/entertainment industry and society and how to build up a new paradigm for Korea to keep its prospering as a country of advanced culture for the new century and new millennium.
In this context, my efforts centered initially on a thorough analysis on the current situation and environmental problems that Korean culture faces presently, and then, processed and organized them into major industry categories of entertainment industry, through a statistical methodology, to estimate its market volume by industry and to analyze the inter-relationship and macro-economic pervasive effects among related industries as well as cultural window effects. This paper could lead to final practical solution and suggestions for optimum policy measures to be taken for a supreme cultural industry for Korea.
