This study divides lodging facilities in Japan into two broad categories: the western-style hotel, and the distinctively Japanese ryokan. Taking lodgers who have chosen their lodgings for a variety of travel objectives as research subjects, it attempts to clarify attributes consumers use as a basis of choice of lodging type. The study considers this research question in relation to private space lifestyles, and in relation to the attributes weighted heavily when either a hotel or a ryokan is chosen. Factor analysis is used to abstract or derive types of lifestyle and hotel choice criteria. The analysis demonstrates that differences in lodgers' lifestyles affect the attributes they emphasized in choosing lodging types. Analysis results show the importance for hotel guests of factors such as "release from the everyday" and "concentration on oneself". Analysis results show an emphasis on "open communication" factors among guests choosing ryokan. The results also show a tendency to emphasise "accessibility" and "staff reliability" among guests of metropolitan hotels.
Meanwhile, guests of ryokan weighted heavily choice criteria such as "adventurous menu" and "external aspects".
