The hospitality industry in the Philippines is a multicultural workplace not only because of a major international market but also because of the presence of international managers called "expatriates". This descriptive research is an initial study that examined the differences in work values among expatriate managers and the Filipino workforce, both managers and rank-and-file employees, in ten deluxe hotels in Metro Manila. Data obtained from the preliminary interviews with selected respondents were used as the content for the self-administered questionnaires which were subjected to statistical tests of differences. Findings from the study revealed that preferred work values from the expatriates by Filipino rank-and-file employees were relational in nature while Filipino managers valued work opportunities or those that enhanced their effectiveness as managers. For the expatriate managers, work values reflected their being work-focused and being output-oriented. Significant paired difference showed incongruities between the preferred work values and actual performance of the three types of respondents.
Results from the data identified which work values could be the basis for the discrepancies in terms of expectations in the work place. A collaborative work effort among agencies in the Philippine government, the Academe and the hotel industry should be undertaken to develop a competence ?based assessment tools. The assessment tools will measure the ability in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes of both expatriate managers and Filipino employees in order to produce a more efficient workforce. The effort should be initiated with the end in view of the expatriates' being able to work effectively. The detailed competency standards will ensure a more rigid recruitment and training program for both expatriates and locals in view of improving work relations and creating a more positive work atmosphere and a productive global organization.
