Mexico has been considered as one of the most successful cases of integration to the world market since the 1990s, at least in Latin America, but also in other continents, as well as for multilateral institutions. From this perspective the document will be divided in three chapters. In the first chapter the document will briefly analyze the current debate on globalization, regionalization and polarization. In addition this chapter will present Mexico’s socioeconomic strategy followed since the end of the 1980s in the context of NAFTA. The second chapter will present the main socioeconomic results of Mexico’s liberalization strategy in Mexico, stressing issues such as production, employment, wages, income distribution and trade. The third chapter will highlight the prior chapters and outline alternative options. The document will emphasize that Mexico’s socioeconomy since the implementation of liberalization strategy has began an historically unprecedented process of polarization, i.e. only a very small number of households, firms, sectors, branches and regions have participated in the integration to the world market, while most of these are at the level of the 1980s or even earlier. In addition, competition with Asia and particularly with China, profoundly question Mexico’s specialization process.
