This essay raises some issues that have characterized the historical relationship between Mexico and the Asia Pacific region and which have continued to impact the current trade relationships. Mexico has an important commercial opportunity in the Asia Pacific region. The dynamism of the Asiatic nations and their great development are factors which make them strategic partners. Nevertheless, Mexico shows itself to be deeply dependent on the North American market, and Mexican knowledge of the Asian markets is limited. We affirm that the Mexican strategies of diversification in the Asia Pacific region are not continuous, are not planned, and are not designed within the framework of a long term perspective. The increasing closeness of Mexico to Japan and to Korea, have taken place in a conjectural moment in which the interests of the political group and the business sector coincide. In the context of this scenario, we analyze the development of the trade pact known as “the Agreement between Japan and the United Mexican States for the Strengthening of the Economic Partnership”, which has been in effect since 2005. Also we study the negotiations between Mexico and South Korea to concretize a trade agreement. We affirm that these nations represent options of diversification for Mexico, but the signed agreement with Japan does not evidence a complementary economic activity. In the case of South Korea, the process has been through stages of stagnation and uncertainty, because the business sector is skeptical and has withheld support for the signature of this agreement for fear of the uneven competition in some sensitive Mexican sectors.
