This study examines ecofeminism, one branch of modern radical ecological philosophy. Though there are many types in ecofeminism, this study focuses on a particular one, so-called cultural ecofeminism.
Cultural ecofeminists insist that the global ecological crisis is due to patriarchy. They argue that it is responsible both for oppressing women and destroying nature. According them, this oppression and destruction has been justified by 'the logic of domination.' This logic presupposes value-dualisms, in which one pair of the duality is regarded as inferior to the other (e. g., male versus female, mind versus body, culture versus nature, reason versus emotion), and a substantive value judgement, which justifies that the allegedly superior pole should be permitted to dominate the inferior pole. For long time, cultural ecofeminists maintain, women and nature, body, and emotion identified as female in gender have been considered inferior to men and culture, mind, and reason as male under patriarchy. Therefore, they hope to deconstruct patriarchy and to envision the ecofeminist culture that should supplant patriarchy, as a prerequisite key to overcome the ecological crisis.
But, the universality of the nature-woman identification is rejected by the fact that there is no such identification in the Far Eastern culture including Korea. In this region, nature has been regarded as impersonal, generative cosmic function. Moreover, people have had a holistic, organic view about nature, not a dualistic one, even though patriarchy prevails.
