The purpose of the study was to discuss the needs and directions of equipping a partnership ministry in the Korean church, especially in the dimension of a capability-based growth approach. Christian partnership is to be understood as a relationship of mutuality and trust based on the gift of God’s Covenant with us in our lives. The partnership with Christ is described in the New Testament by the word koinoinia.
As part of a case study on partnership ministry, information about “S” Church pastors were collected and surveyed from the church’s website. One hundred forty-one pastors were analyzed regarding gender distribution, kinds of ministry, and the placement of ministry dependent upon gender. Partnership ministry between men and women pastors exist in the professional areas of training, pastoral duties, educational ministries, and international services.
In conclusion, the Korean church has especially wasted the resource of the capabilities of women. The infrastructure of the 21st century opens a window of opportunity for both women and men pastors to implement their potential capabilities. Free riding will no longer be acceptable. Male pastors should give up their monopolization in ministry and female pastors should give up their despair. The Korean church should solve the “double jeopardy” by developing a capability-based partnership ministry.
Six tasks which are needed to improve resourceful partnership ministry were suggested: educational, institutional, operational, professional, incentive, and reconceptualization. Along the process of solving these tasks, it is time for Korean churches to harmonize and fully mobilize the disjointed and hierarchical gender resources in the church, which can cause the church to leap-frog to another engine for the second church growth cycle in Korea.
