The main purpose of this study is to understand small group dynamics and cell church in the perspective of Christian education, church history and pastoral ministry. In the first section, this study figures out the difference general small groups in church and cell group as a new paradigm. A cell church is a Christian church structure centering on the regular gathering of cell groups. Small group ministries are often called cell groups, but may be different from several aspects. A definition of a cell church is notably tricky. A church with cell groups is not necessarily a cell church. A cell church must be composed of cell groups and centered around them. In cell churches, a cell leader is considered to be effectively a pastor or mentor within the church. John Wesley used a form of cell group structure which he called Class Meetings as he formed his Methodist societies into national movement, first in Great Britain and later in the United States of America in the 18th century.
In the second section, this study reviewed the history of small group movement from the early churches to these days. The first New Testament example of a small group is the small group the Christ chose. According to Backham, Christ's example of spending time with twelve disciples is the perfect time with twelve disciples is the perfect model for starting a cell church. New spiritual life has been marked by the emergence of small groups. Even in the Middle Ages, dynamic Christians gathered in small groups for prayer and study, training and service. They kept a flame burning admist the darkness of a decaying ecclesiasticism. Various sections of small group movement in Europe formed dynamic house-centered groups. They, such as Saint Francis of Assissi, Martin Luther, and the Hutterites in Moravia, lived out a New Testament-style community life, which had a far-reaching impact. The cell church movement today has done a great service to the church by reminding us of our New Testament roots. This movement rightly points to the New Testament as the basis for their practice. Although there are lots of strengths in the cell church ministry, there are also various dangers that can occur. One of those dangers is the issue of independence and isolation. When a cell leader exercises control without outside accountability, false doctrine and other problems can develop.
