The Christian community today in Korea is in serious crisis. They are unable to transform the surrounding culture so they are assimilating into it. Secularism and individualism are the root causes of this problem. Even those who are outwardly active in Christian ministries often fail to overcome their individual self-interest. In order to overcome this selfish brand of individualism, we must take up the “Kingdom values.”Jesus spoke about this in his public life and showed us through the cross and resurrection. This was the purpose of Jesus’ ministry. The writer looked to the Church of the Savior in Washington D.C. for inspiration. The Church’s emphasis is on balance between “Inward Journey”(spirituality) and “Outward Journey”(service)through small mission group ministries, which have been the most challenging. The Church of the Savior has a very strict membership process, disciplined training structure and participation in the related inner-city ministries. Derived from these small mission group ministries they have started more than forty related ministries. The Church has a fine reputation as a model of an authentic church in the States. It can be applicable to any other ministries. The writer's effort is to examine essences of the mission groups at the Church of the Savior and apply it to our ministry setting. In Hyup Sung University as statistics show, more than 70% of students who attend chapel are not Christian. So, we developed Hyup Sung Open Worship(HOW), which started in 2006, with the purpose to prepare a worship service that would meet the students’ standards of expectation. As a result, we have a more positive response from the students. However, chapel services focus on christian value and character rather than evangelism and conversion. There is always tension between evangelization and humanization in campus ministry. So,it is a great challenge for the chaplain’s office to prepare meaningful servicesfor this constituency. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the current campus ministry and to develop future direction based upon mission group ministries of the Church of the Savior. The writer would like to suggest small group ministries as an alternative model of the future campus ministry context. We believe that committed small group ministries will contribute greatly tothe renewal of the Korean christian community as well as the future of campus ministries.
