The academic circles of art history has looked back and forecasted about the entire Korean art history many times. The field of ceramic history has been estimated in this process. This paper intends to examine and valuate “art history and crafts” which is the great theme of the 18th Korean Association of Art History Education through the limited subject, research of Joseon white porcelain.
Japanese started the research on the Joseon white porcelain before Korea’s liberation. At first, the research was about sentimental interests of the antiques and tea utensils. Later it advanced to the trial to understand the substantial beauty of Korea. Korean scholars studied Joseon white porcelain after 1960s. They are not professional porcelain historians but handicrafts men and institutional historians. Their main research based on plenty of data was how the governmental kilns were managed institutionally.
The study of white porcelain was regularized by porcelain historians in 1980s. Various kinds of kiln sites were unearthed and investigated at thar time. The main concerns of the researchers were the foundation year of governmental kilns, characteristics of porcelain from governmental kilns. In 1990s, the period of increasing young researchers, a number of masters and doctors researched the white porcelain, and they published academic magazines of those works. The propensity to study tended to widen for the growth of kiln investigation, interest of kiln structure and comparison of unearthed remains. Generation of the researchers and the field of research has changed for local kilns rather than governmental kilns after 2000s.
Reconsidering of study on the Joseon white porcelain, we can see that focus of study moved from interest of antiques and tea utensils to governmental kilns and local kilns. The research methodology has turned from aesthetics to institutions or operations, and it developed to foundation year of kilns or the style of the porcelain. Those accomplishment is about the visible consequences. The essential subject is the social, cultural background of production of the porcelain.
To understand Joseon porcelain culture ultimately, the study should be diverse and various beyond years and styles. Approaching history of life, comprehending remains, diplomatic situations, scientific research and the statistics make it possible to estimate whole porcelain in depth.
