This paper is an attempt to search for a narrative which enables inexperienced Blake readers to come closer to The Marriage of Heaven and Hell by probing into the meaning of ‘marriage’ with reference to the concept of Blakean friendship. In a sense, this attempt is inevitable in that a given poem has the character of education of readers. As for the meaning of ‘marriage’, the main critical tendency points out that Blake's idea of the ‘contrary’ contradicts itself as an Angel turns into a Devil. This reading, however, follows in the tracks of the static Swedenborgian dichotomy, Blake's professed target of an attack, only to fail to grasp a dynamic or dramatic exposition of the ‘contrary’ state of Bleaken friendship. Thus the statement epitomizing Bleakean friendship, “Opposition is true Friendship” should not be taken at face value but need to be recognized in terms of its enactment. The arena of such an active opposition is 'A Memorable Fancy' where Blake examines the cogency of his own thinking and his position as a prophetic poet, subverts the conventional stereotype of heaven and hell which an Angel espouses, and sets a Devil to instruct an Angel in Blake's unique notion of deity and Jesus so that the latter may ‘alter his opinion’ and become the former's true friend.
