After feeding ¹³CO₂ to satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu cv. Okitsu) leaves, the time-course changes in the ¹³C content of various parts (juice, pulp, and peel) of maturing fruit were monitored in the axial direction (stem end, mid section, and stylar end). The accumulation rate was evaluated as the increase in the percentage of ¹³C content of each tissue. The juice showed lowest accumulation rate within all tissues. The pulp and peel exhibited similar accumulation patterns in the stem end and mid section, whereas the greatest accumulation rate was obvious in the peel of stylar end. In the juice, the accumulation rate was consistently lowest in the mid section in the axial direction throughout the experiment. There were decreasing gradients in the water content from stem end toward stylar end in juice, pulp, and peel. These results indicate the differential accumulation of photosynthates in the fruit portions, which may be partly linked with differences in sugar and acid content in fruit parts.
