Stone Adzes are single?blade polished stone artifacts whose plane chart approximates to a rectangle, and whose width is longer than the thickness. The study of the stone adze, an important tool in the Neolithic and Bronze periods, involves the naming of each part of the adze. Photos, charts and letters are used to record the marks observed on the stone adzes which should be described both quantitatively and qualitatively. In this paper, stone adzes are categorized according to their shape and size. In light of the proportion of the length and the width, stone adzes whose length are longer than the width are called long adzes, and those whose length are shorter than the width are named short adzes. According to the shape of their back, stone adzes can be sorted into the following categories: the arc backed adze, the ridged adze, the stepped adze, the slotted adze, the short arc ?backed adze, and the short ridged adze. Marks on the stone adzes showing how they were made and used are essential to the investigation of their manufacturing and use. Altogether, there are three types of manufacture marks, namely, flaking marks, rubbing marks and polishing marks. Use wears also fall into three types, i.e. blade wears, haft wears, and top wears. The hafting determines the way in which an adze is used, and hence the parts where marks appear and the types of the marks. One key feature of the stone adze is the renewing of the blade edge, a technique to get a new edge and hence extend the life of an adze after its blade edge is broken or blunt. Comparing use marks left on the stone adze with those on bone objects and wood artifacts unearthed at the same site is an effective way of probing into the use of stone adzes. Stone adzes can be used to process tools made of wood, and bone and horn, cut trees as well as butcher animals. The invention of the stone adze as an important polished stone artifact revealed people’s need for a new tool to enhance efficiency and increase production. With the development of the society, the stone adze even served as non?utilitarian with a certain symbolic meaning for some periods in certain areas.
