Pessimism is the core of tragedy. It makes the tragedy touched, unforgettable and culture meaningful and powerful. Since the writer starts out the Taiwan literature research, he finds out Taiwan intertwined with unfortunate fate and that seems without the end. Looking back a centaury history, Japan colonized Taiwan after the Chia?Wu War (or the Sino-Japanese War) as the loot from Ching Empire, possessing the right to manage this territory with his own will in the early of fifty years. After the war of independence, Taiwan underwent the 228 Incident, White Fear, and long?term of martial art proclamation and others for another 50 years. Other than that, the national government that moved out of Mainland China obstinately pursued after “unite China under the Three Principles of the People,” and “conquer the China.” All of these fluctuations consequently impedes the cultural growth and retards the literature development. Taiwan tells a series of hard time story and depicts more in history and social events than in literature. Only can the literal writers and poets observe the gloom and vicious trend the most. There are common descriptions within them describing the loss of ego and the pursuit of freedom. Of course, it is very normal to pursue after the cozy and beautiful life in the gray era. The literary images are the reflection of the way the human beings survive for living.
This paper will sketch the whole picture of Cheng’s two unnoticeable novels, Forever smile and the death of black ?faced Jin Wang. Cheng sensitive on social alternation, good at psychology, and keen on multi focus description will point out the human beings’ complexity, mutual aversion, and self?impairment. He said, “Taiwan is not the heaven but rife with misery and loss… a stray could be just beside you, and/or could be just you.” He transfers the pressure from the real world into his two novels, Forever smile and the death of black faced Jin Wang, conveying the stubborn and flexible value, human darkness and down…etc. Each controversial issue could lead to any tragedy. Cheng full of life experience plants all kinds of plots into the story and leaves a lot of space for the readers to ponder.
