According to folk etymology, the origin of dorumuk goes back to an old story where it was told to name a certain fish 'Muk' back. Examining the background of such origin, this study intends to trace the etymology through presenting the original form of dorumuk and further investigate its processes of derivation.
The original form of dorumuk is presumed to be dolmok, which appeared in Suncheongimssimyochultoganchal. Mok in dolmok is presumed to be the Chinese character mok[目] for eye and dol preceding mok in dolmok is classified into a prefix meaning 'low-quality', such as dol in dolgorae, dolbungeo, etc. The prefix dol- is derived from dol transcribed into the Chinese character seok[石], which means stone. It is presumed to have used the prefix dol- because dorumuk was a common and worthless kind of fish. On the other hand, it is not certain that mok was applied to the original form. However, considering the fish of bimok, yeolmok, etc., their names with mok imply that their eyes are characteristic.
It is considered that dolmok originating in the 16th Century was changed into doreumok, inserting a vowel eu: this is the same case that myeolchi is transformed to myeoreuchi in a certain area. Doreumok was changed into doromok, with the second vowel of doreumok assimilated with the first and third vowels. Then, doromok becomes doromuk, turning the final vowel negative. The second vowel o in doromuk is assimilated with the final vowel u, changing doromuk into doromuk. Consequently, it could be suggested that the word dormuk has been derived from the following process: 'dolmok＞doremuk＞doromuk＞dorumuk.'
