Dogab Temple(道岬寺) is surrounded by Walchul mountain(月出山), which is a noted mountain for its scenic beauty. Ever since it was founded by National Preceptor Doseon, Dogab Temple has housed many cultural assets. Besides, Walchul mountain, along with Mudeung and Jiri mountains, has a tradition of being a holy place of prayers. This is because it has been dedicated a place for national memorial services in which the destiny of the nation and the peace of its people have been prayed for since the Shilla Dynasty. However, since the introduction of Buddhism to Korea, this mountain has also been called Jije Mountain(支提山), and Cheonbul Mountain(千佛山) with a Buddhist tinge because many temples such as Dogab, Muwui, Walnam, and Cheongpung were founded at Walchul Mountain.
In the Goryeo Dynasty, this temple won nationwide religious fame because a five-storied stone pagoda, a three-storied stone pagoda, a seated stone Buddha statue, Gukjangsaeng(國長生) and four stone poles for demarcation were built. In the Chosun Dynasty, the Haetalmun(解脫門) was built, supported by the Great King Sejo, and subsequently, two young monk images like Bohyeonbosal(普賢菩薩) as well as Munsubosal(文殊菩薩) were erected. In the 17th century, with the erection of a Myogakhwasangbi(妙覺和尙碑) and a Doseon-Sumibi(道詵守眉碑), this temple paraded its nationwide fame.
It had been thought that the five-storied pagoda at this temple had one-stepped platform, but this pagoda was restored to the original shape after the lower platform was found by the Mokpo University Museum. It is assumed that this stone pagoda was built in the late 10th century, compared to other nearby pagodas. It is assumed that this five¬storied pagoda was erected with the material or spiritual support of Choi Ji Mong(崔知夢), a native of Yeongam, and Saint Gyeongbo(慶甫大師), both of whom helped in the foundation of Goryeo. It is also assumed that the ideal envisioned on the foundation of this pagoda was to make up for a deficiency.
