Ahn, Hoe-Nam led an active life as a personal petit bourgeois writer ever since he had made his debut in the literary world in 1931, but after 1945 liberation, in the whirl of the desire of unification, the breakdown of the U.S.-Soviet Joint Commission and the partition of the South and North of Korea, he disguised himself as Chairman of the Committee of Novel Section which belonged to Choseon Literary Circle dominated by Rim, Hwa who supported Park, Heon-Young.
This was, however, originated not due to Ahn, Hoe-Nam's change of political consciousness toward the political situation of the day but due to his experience as a coal worker at Kyushu coal mine in Japan at the last stage of Japanese imperialism and this made him a writer of the Literary Circle.
As the result of this, Ahn, Hoe-Nam was brainwashed and was requested from the commanding leaders of the Literary Circle to reflect their political consciousness positively through his creative writing. This was why his novels came to show the literary trends of three stages changing from the consciousness of petit bourgeois of the past to a political realist. His novel “The Sorrow of Farmers” is a work which shows the most successful fruit of realism.
The purpose of this thesis is to examine closely how the political consciousness of the Literary Circle and the writer's artistic sense of beauty affect with each other and prove individual sense of beauty and ideology on the basis of the work “The Sorrow of Farmers.” The result is as follows.
The political consciousness of this novel was to criticize the economic policy of the U.S. military government through the description of hungry lives and death of South Korean farmers around 1945 liberation and to object to the establishment of independent government of South Korea. The aesthetic equipments to depict the hunger of the farmers of South Korea are Seo, Dae-Eung, the protagonist, and a pair of wooden shoes symbolizing his tragic life and a couple of deer symbolizing his unattainable dream. These contribute to accomplishing the important ideology of the work related with each other organically. But these accomplish the realism around 1945 liberation by describing the universal human love and national common dearest wish symbolically beyond the propaganda level rather than contributing to showing the ideology of particular political group in spite of the intentional political utterance of the speaker in the novel.
This result is regarded as the triumph of realism accomplished in the writer's consciousness through the synergism of the original political ideology and the universal sense of beauty in the process that the writer's sense of obligation to reflect the political line of the Choseon Literary Circle and the writer's sense of beauty are fighting and negotiating with each other.
