A number of output-only modal identification methods exist. Among them, the FDD (Frequency Domain Decomposition) and SSI (Stochastic Subspace Identification) methods are recognized as most suitable for the application to large civil engineering structures such as highrise buildings. This paper introduces the background theories of FDD and SSI then two dynamic measurement examples for buildings are given to demonstrate their application to extract the dynamic properties of those buildings such as mode shapes, natural frequencies and damping properties. The results and the future direction of research in this field area discussed.
