This paper presents a new interpretation of Guunmong, ‘Nine Clouds Dream’ in the early 20th century, by creating a map based on locations mentioned in the novel because narrative space plays an important role in this story.
First, Hyeongsan (衡山) of Mt. Hyeong symbolizes a world of condensation or a space for cultivating the Dao (xiudao, 修道). Although the mountainwas located at the periphery of mundane world, it served a center or the omphalos because priest Yukgwan and madam Wi resided in the eastern and southern part of the mountain respectively.
Second, Seongjin and eight nymphs changed from condensation to diffusion by living differentlives. In the map, Seongjin traveled from Hyeongsan in South to Pungdo in West and then to Suju in East by becoming Yangsoyu. The eight nymphs also scattered all over the world and developed relations with men from different social classes. Yangsoyu then explored the entire world through two times of traveling as well as his journey to the place where national examination was held.
Third, at the peak of his wealth and prosperity, Yangsoyu settled down. He gathered the eight nymphs through arrangement of palace and gisaengs (singing and dancing girls) through holding a hunting game in Nakyuwon, concentrating the entire world. In the end, he left mundane world by traveling to Yeonhwa Temple through Chuimi Palace. With the map of Guunmong, we can confirm images of center, totality and ascendance.
