This study deals with the expression of water image in the Korean modern eco-poetry. Eco-poetry has developed through three stages, the first stage of eco-poetry puts emphasis on ecological conversion, the second stage expands and intensifies eco-poetical consciousness. And the last stage searches for ecological alternative.
The expression of water image that appears in the eco-poetry at the first stage is about contaminated water by mankind. Contaminated sea, polluted river and acid rain, grey snow are ultimately the warning of the end of human beings.
The second-stage water image is related to various conditions of water in the earth. Water can change from liquid(water) to gas(vapor) or to solid(ice). It can circulate through all lives in the earth. This kind of water image provides valuable contribution to making eco-centric thoughts.
The third-stage water image is connected to the inner character of water. It is the nature of water to run downhills and this is the providence of nature. Positioned in the food web, man must search for a practicable eco-centric life. The goal of eco-poetry is to instill water characters into the human mind. The water image expressed in Korean modern eco-poetry serves this goal.
