This study evaluates the achievements and limitations of Korean ecological poetics published in Literature and Environment, in celebration of its 10th anniversary. The subjec to fanalysisis an assortment of 42 papers.
The papers can be arranged into four categories.
1. Those that illuminate ecological significance of pieces according to their foremost characteristic values;
(e.g., critiques of anthropocentrism an dindictments of modernization, reflections on the ‘web’ of interdependent entities that form the world, praises for the vitality of nature, essays on eco-centric implications of Buddhist philosophy, observations of poets’ underlying eco-poetic traits as Taoist, explorations of fundamental purpose of ecological ethics, etc.)
2. Those that newly bring into light the eco-poetic aspects of renowned poets;
3. Those that review the current level of eco-poetic production and research;
4. Miscellaneous studies of children’s poetry, comparative-literary researches, among others.
The achievements of these papers can be organized as follows:
1. Confirmation of eco-literary consciousness in poems and clarification of their significance in eco-literature;
2. Re-discovery of major figures in Korean poetry as eco-poets;
3. Introduction of unknown eco-poets;
4. Emphasis on prospect efforts in aesthetic aspects of eco-poetry in order to resolve a certain contrived rigidity observed in some works;
5. Exploration for ecological implications in otherwise ordinary works.
This study proposes a list of areas for future efforts in eco-poetics in order to further the aforementioned achievements and overcome confronting limitations:
1. Continuing efforts to read and interpret diverse works from an ecological point of view;
2. Further developing eco-poetics so as to establish a higher aesthetic standard;
3. Standardizing the critical terminology of eco-poetics in order to encourage more systematic studies;
4. Promoting interdisciplinary studies;
5. Concentrating efforts on the education of ecological literature to promote ecological consciousness and expand scholarship.
