This article studies the types and characteristics of the Dongje which has been performed in the seaside districts of Gochang and Buan gun, Jeonbuk Province based on the spot survey. The author tried to find the method how we can make practical application of the Dongje as a festival in this article.
Dongje are generally classified into a festival, a sacrifice, and a mixture type. A festival type of Dongje is mainly performed in these districts even though a mixture type is occasionally performed. Every village has a different type of Donje. This difference of the type is result from the geographical and cultural difference.
The duality of the sacrificial rite and the identification of the sacrificial month are the characteristics of Dongje performed in the seaside districts. The apparence of this characteristics is closely related with the special life style of the people in these districts. This type of Dongje, that is, appeared in the special life of the people who engaged both in agriculture and fishery. The religious significance connoted in the Playing together such as the Tug-of-war and the Winding strings must also be grasped in relation with Donje.
The Donje and Tug-of-war performed in the seaside districts of Jeonbuk province are the special folk culture of this province. These folk legacies must be well preserved. As a method to secure the preservation of these folks, the author proposes to make practical use them as a village festival in the future.
