In the traditional society women needed only their ‘dispelling’ which could forget their daily anxieties and worries and then they often enjoyed playing on the swings for their own liberation. But did the women play on the swings by ‘riding on it’ or ‘propelling it’? The reason that such a question like this is needed is that there are different enjoyments of playing between ‘riding’ and ‘propelling’ the swings. Another reason is that we need to properly look into the aspects of using the playing tools. ‘Propelling’ is often showed in the plays for women and it is the word of the method of playing. It is also the playing itself. But swings are not ‘jumping’ like boards or jump-ropes. Swings or seesaws are a kind of ‘riding’ because we take our bodies on them and we move them back and forth, up and down, or in circles. We intend to look into the enjoyment and the cultural inside which the subjects of playing feel, and the sexual symbolism which the folk phenomena of playing on the swings stand for. Playing on the swings is considered to be a similar sexual act in that it makes them forget the present situations, feeling nervosity and excitement, that is, they seek the situation of an ecstatic state, mentally disordering. We, at first, examine the meaning and function related with swings, and then, the sexual symbolism of the field and playing on the swings in order to make sure of these matters. As a result, this paper reads the sexual customs based on the analyses of documents and historic records. In the era of Cho-sun playing on the swings meant a kind of sorcery, which they played in accordance with the time of Dan-o(May 5th the lunar calendar) when the crops are most prosperous. They hoped the rich harvest by promoting the germination and the production.
If we watch the movements of playing on the swings, we can see it is similar to the sexual activities in that it gets higher as they propels it each time, and finally it arises the peak, and then it grows gradually lower in moving, and then stops. Playing on the swings also has a function of women liberation through escaping their routine bonds. It makes women feel the amusement of sex by themselves not by the immediate relations of men and women. If men participate in the field of swings, the covert conversation which men and women have, the eye contacts which they give and take, and the warmth which they rub each other are changed. At last, the exact sexual relations are realized in the field of playing on the swings. In Dan-o women who are the subjects of productions and symbols of Yin take part in a kind of shamanistic act accepting Yang by using swings because Dan-o is the day when Yang rises high up. Women guarantee the succession of production greeting the day of liberation by expressing their oppressed sex. ‘The field’ of playing on the swings is the place where love budded, and the playground where the mood of sex is highly elated. The queer heart pounding and pleasant feeling in playing on the swings are the things which taste as much the sense of liberation as the efforts of freedom. Women have achieved the shout of sexual liberation, the radiation of the instinct of sex, and the social demonstration together.
