Through this paper I tried to study on the formation of Chinese traditional theatre from the ritual activities, especially the nuo-tang-xi of Gui-zhou Province. It has a long tradition as a cultural performance. This paper was written based on my own field research carried on at Song-tao city of Tong-ren prefecture, Gui-zhou Province in the summer of 1995 and many other reports on the nuo-tang-xi of the other cities of Tong-ten prefecture.
The Nuo-tang-xi is very popular in Tong-ren prefecture and can be classified into 3 types according to the geographical and historical environments. The Nuo-tang-xi generally is a kind of ritual theatre handed down for a long time by the group[壇班] of patrimonial shaman [巫]. They perform the ritual of exorcism to expel devils and pray for happy, wealthy and healthy life. They play roles of many deities by wearing the masks and perform the long descented folklore including their ethnical history and the knowledge of life by the multiple way of performance including singing, dancing, acting and magical feat such as climbing up the knife mountain, stir with naked hands in hot oil pot, walking on the burning stone or iron plate. Especially the climbing up the knife mountain is a very popular way of exorcism carried for 12 year old child's good health and good luck.
From the performance of nuo-tang-xi of Tong-ren prefecture, we can find a proto type of Chinese traditional theatre in its environment of performance, group of specialized performers of long patrimony and training, and the performing style of multiple way of presentation.
