Nationalist historians perceived Kim Bu Shik as a historian who maintained quite a subservient attitude toward China. They also denounced the historical text『Samguk Sagi』, which Kim Bu Shik led the task of writing it, as a subservient version of a history regarding the ancient period of Korea. They believed that in the process of creating『Samguk Sagi』, Kim Bu Shik, based upon his Confucian beliefs, deliberately distorted the facts by deleting or inserting certain factual details. They even blamed him for not including the history of Buyeo and Balhae in『Samguk Sagi』, and creating a false, distorted version of the ancient history of Korea as a result.
Nationalist historians' criticism of Kim Bu Shik and the『Samguk Sagi』text was hardly based upon either meticulous examination of the text or rational reasoning, and therefore the arguments have shown many weaknesses. Also, studies of『Samguk Sagi』have made quite some progress recently, and it has become a general understanding that Kim Bu Shik and others maintained the position of the so-called 'only documenting, and not creating(述而不作)' during the creation of『Samguk Sagi』. The fact that the Nationalist historians' perception of『Samguk Sagi』is in need to be entirely reviewed, has been made clear to us.
Yet, it should also be noted that, Nationalist historians’ criticism of『Samguk Sagi』did provide the Korean society of historians with an invaluable opportunity to establish a new trend of historical studies based upon modern Nationalism.
