Parents' intentional or unintentional activities influence the formation of Christian faith in children. This study was to examine what kind of parental factors develop religiosity of in the family through related literature review and empirical studies. It investigated the concept of religiosity, dimensions of religiosity, and factors that influence on religiosity in the family. From this study, findings indicated how Christian parents may nurture their children's Christian faith in God in a more helpful manner.
Religiosity measures the motivation toward God behind one's behavior. It has two dimension; intrinsic and extrinsic. The extrinsically motivated person uses his religion as means to other ends, such as personal security and social gain. They do not adopt the full creed and teaching of religion. However, the intrinsically motivated lives his religion with self-serving motivation for being involved in religion and has a genuine faith which represents the central value or commitment in one's life.
Related empirical studies and literature review showed that some religious family characteristics enhanced value transmission from parents to their children. They also showed that parental religiosity influence on their children's religiosity. When parents emphasize religion in childhood home, this influences on children's later religiousness. Parenting styles also influence on children's religiosity.
This study provided theoretical and practical implications for children's spiritual development at home and at church. First, it suggested that Christian educators and ministers need to try to reinforce the parents' sincere faith and to promote Christian education in Christian families. Second, it suggested that Christian parental role should be emphasized in order to enhance children's intrinsic religiosity. Third, it suggested that Christian parent education programs need to be prepared by Korean churches.
