Henri J. M. Nouwen (1932-1996), known best for his books--The Wounded Healer and The Return of the Prodigal Son?was the author of over 40 books on the spiritual life that witnessed to a spirituality of the heart as the deepest meaning of theology. A Dutch psychologist, Roman Catholic priest and popular author, Nouwen taught pastoral theology at Notre Dame, Yale and Harvard Universities before becoming pastor of L’Arche community near Toronto. His major contribution to Christian spirituality and Christian education is an emphasis on the primacy of the heart over head. The spirituality of the heart is what is prior to and beyond cognitive belief.
In all religions and faith traditions, beliefs matter, right actions matter, and proper rituals are important. But what is most important is a good, right and warm heart. Since God considers the quality of the heart before judging cognitive beliefs of the mind or the actions of the body, the way of the heart is key for Nouwen doing theology and in teaching from center.
The spiritual heart is the primary reality and spiritual construct in the theology of Henri Nouwen. The word "heart" in Scripture is a metaphor for spiritual life at its depth. It is the center of our being, our well of emotions, out of which may flow both good and evil thoughts and actions. The spiritual heart feels and intuits reality, which nourishes beliefs and actions, attitudes and passions. Mystically, according to Nouwen, "our heart--the center of our being--is a part of God." It is that sacred space within us "where God dwells and we are invited to dwell with God."
The Way of the Heart in the spirituality of Nouwen is the way of inner purity and transformation, beginning with a spiritual awakening, purification, growth and development of a divine heart in the body of a human being, lived out in community and service in the world. The Practice of the Heart is called compassion. It is the experience of "letting your heart be broken by the things that break the heart of God" and acting on this visceral intuition of Divine will. This is what it means to live and teach from the center of our being, prior to and beyond cognitive belief. This is the spirit of practical theology and Christian education, even in a technological age.
